Asojano is the Orisha of the epidemics that hover over the lands. Asojano also know as Babaluaye or Acronica brings diseases, infections of the skin and other sicknesses whether terminal or non terminal onto humankind. Asojano is said to be a man that walks around on his crutches with abscess and other skin disorders on his body. He wasn’t like that before legends say but that is how he is now. Asojano was entrusted by Olofi after his punishment to inflict these epidemics onto the earth. He is said to be one of Olofi’s wrath and through his actions we suffer.

He is also the Orisha of discrimination. Due to his sickness and the epidemics he has conflicted on him, many people outcast him and did not want anything to do with him. They would throw water at him when he would try to approach them, which is an offense to Asojano in now days. He is also seen as a beggar. That’s what he disguises himself as to test and see how the heart of man is. When you fail that test, Asojano usually brings epidemics and sickness to your life. Whether it is directly to you or the closest person or thing to you. He is the epidemics that happen to the world in an instant. The people that are inflicted with these epidemics are said no to be victims, but are now his messengers to show the world that he does exist and to have respect for Olofi and him.

Asojano does not like water on him due to the discrimination he received. The only water he can receive is coconut water. He does not go out in the day time because the rays of Olorun burn his skin that is infected. Rather, Asojano goes out at night and its there where he begins his work either releasing his wrath of epidemics on man or relieving and aiding epidemics on man. In the house of his followers, Asojano is received with a clay tureen that his secrets are kept. He is kept somewhere hidden where the light does not hit him. Asojano is received also with 2 cachas (bracelets made of goat skin and burlap) and an ajà (broom made out of dried palm branches) in which he uses his ajar to swat away the flies and mosquitoes that follow him everywhere he goes. He is also received with his personal Elegua, Eshu Afra, and Nanu.

Asojano was exiled from Yoruba due to the epidemics and plague that followed him. The people were terrified and disgusted of him so they banished him. Chango led Asojano to the land of Mahoney/Benin accompanied by 2 dogs that were gifts from Chango and Asojano was received with open arms. There he was made king and the lands progressed. He was treated fairly with love and respect and no one discriminated against him.

Pataki of Asojano

The beautiful Asojano was in his house one afternoon resting from last nights rendezvous he had with one of his many mistresses. He was a ladies man and was very handsome. He decided to go pay his friend Orula a visit to see what the oracles of Ifa would tell him. He grabbed his shirt and started his march to Orula’s house. He began to walk and came across Elegua who was sitting on the sides of the roads drinking some rum. Asojano stopped and greeted Elegua and they talked for a little while. Asojano as always gave Elegua some candies to enjoy himself with his rum. Elegua asked Asojano where was he going and Asojano replied to him that he was going to visit Orula to see what Ifa could tell him. He wanted to know how his life was going and Orula was the best bet for him. Asojano said his good byes to Elegua and kept on his journey.

Asojano was walking and came across the river where he sat down to take a breather. Suddenly the river goddess Oshun appeared to him and he bowed his head to her. Asojano was always intrigued with Oshun and knew she was one of the loveliest orishas ever. Oshun told Asojano that she saw him the night prior and how he was seducing every woman there. Asojano blushed and told Oshun that he loves the scent of a woman and is always in need of comfort from a woman. Oshun laughed and agreed because she to loves to flirt and party and told him that she had to tend back to her waters and she will see him later.

Asojano made it to Orula’s house and was greeted with some wine and they started to talk. Orula was setting up his table for divination and started to pray to cast the oracles. Asojano sat down in front of Orula and Orula started to speak to Asojano. Orula told Asojano that he was a good man but Olofi didn’t like how he was conducting his life here on earth. Asojano looked confused and asked Orula to be clearer. Orula told Asojano that his of sexual tendencies every night was not good and disrespectful. Orula went on and told him that Olofi was watching how every night, Asojano had a different woman in his bed and there was no respect for himself none less his mistresses. Asojano asked Orula if there was anything he could do to please Olofi and Orula said yes. Orula told him that Olofi wanted him to refrain from having any type of sexual relationship for 3 months to purify himself. Asojano agreed and he knew that Olofi’s word was law and that he would do anything to pacify and honor Olofi.

A few months went by and Asojano was doing what Olofi told him. He refrained from going to parties and having flings with different mistresses that he knew. That same day he heard of a party that was going to take place and he knew that he had to be one of the attendants. So Asojano freshened up and looked for his best clothes to wear to the event. As the sun started to set, Asojano got dressed and went to the party. Before you know it, Asojano was drinking and having a blast. He was socializing with everyone and temptation started to kick in. Towards the end of the party, he found himself talking to a beautiful woman who he invited back to his home. She agreed and they both were back in Asojano’s home making love in his room.

The morning came and Olorun was shining brighter that ever upon the earth. Asojano opened his eyes and was still holding the woman in his arms. He stretched and the woman opened her eyes and when she did she noticed there was a smell coming from the room. She sat up to look at the gorgeous Asojano and she started to scream because Asojano’s body was covered with sores and open wounds. She got out of the bed, grabbed her clothes and ran out the door. Asojano stood up and noticed the sores and smell that was coming from his body. He ran out of his house and everyone noticed his sores and they started to shush him away. The people were throwing water at him and rushing him to leave their door steps. Every time someone threw water on him alongside with the heat from the sun it burned his skin. Asojano did not know what the cause of this was and he started to hobble out of town due to the pain he had in his legs.

He grabbed a stick and hobbled from town to town where he was treated the same way. Asojano grew hungry and even that he was denied from the villagers. There was nothing he could do but he remembered that this could be from the wrath of Olofi. He fell in between a patch of cundeamor (special herb for Asojano) and started to pray for forgiveness. Olofi listened to his words but did not forgive him. Asojano continued his journey from town to town begging for food and facing discrimination from everyone until one day he dropped and fell dead. His spirit was rising to the foot of Olofi while his body was thrown behind a rock.

Days went on and the all of Asojano’s mistresses were talking and saying how they missed the attractive Asojano and that they wish he was here making them feel happy and good. Some of them went to the side of the rivers and they poured their heart out into the river. Oshun who is the owner of the river and emotions heard there plea and saw how these women really missed Asojano. So she took it upon herself and she went to visit Olofi in his castle.

When she arrived at Olofi’s castle she greeted her father and received is blessings. Olofi told her that he knew the reason why she came and Oshun looked at Olofi with sorrowful eyes. Oshun expressed the love that the people had for Asojano on the earth. Olofi told Oshun that yes Asojano was a good person but he was too promiscuous and that he warned Asojano that he would punish him if he didn’t do what was promised. Ochun begged Olofi for Asojano’s forgiveness. Olofi looked at Oshun with a smile and told her that she will give Asojano his life back only because the people and his lovely daughter miss him on the earth but he was to return under one condition. Oshun asked what was the condition and Olofi told her that he will return but his epidemics and sores will continue to follow him. Olofi told Oshun that he will make Asojano an orisha but his ache will be to fight discrimination and to bring or heal epidemics from the lands. He will nurture and heal the sick or he will punish all who discriminate against the sick and needy. Oshun bowed her head to Olofi and accepted the conditions.

Olofi called for Asojano to stand before him. Asojano stood before him and Olofi told him that he would return his spirit back to the land. He told him that he was doing it because his daughter Oshun requested it because he was missed on the lands. Olofi told Asojano that he would make him an orisha and that he was to heal the sick. He also told him that the ashe that he was installing on him was to punish the ones who discriminate and to heal those who were sick. Asojano bowed before Olofi and it was there that Olofi made him an orisha.

Oshun journeyed down to where Asojano’s body was at and she waited for the arrival of his orisha spirit. Once Asojano’s spirit reached his body, he stood up and greeted Oshun. He thanked Oshun for her request and understood the task he was installed to do from Olofi. He said that he would be the wrath of Olofi and he will look after humankind and watch over all who are sick. He proceeded to go to village to village healing the sick and punishing the wrong doers with sickness and epidemics.

Asojano’s feast day is December 17th. He is from the land of Dahomey. Asojano is petitioned when one is sick with an epidemic. He doesn’t like water to be placed in front of him. The only water he likes to be placed in front of him or on top of him is coconut water. It is cool and refreshing for him. His sacrificial foods are goats, roosters, pigeons and guinea hens. When Asojano eats Chango must eat due to a pact that they have when Chango lead Asojano to his land. Asojano has many children on this earth. His mysteries were consecrated on the heads of his followers but those traditions have been lost. Only a few people know the mysteries of doing this powerful ceremony. Today he is done through Yemaya. As to say Yemaya oro Asojano. His children are very solitude individuals and are always making sure they are kept well. They are very spiritual and they can heal spiritually. In Palo Mayombe he is associated with Pata Llaga

On Asojano’s feast day there are many parties and festivals going on in his name. They give him his sacrificial foods and proceed to do an awan (cleansing) with consists of many, many plates with different types of dry beans, grains and vegetables from the earth. This cleansing is done in the dark and the offerings are taken to the woods. Asojano has many paths which are listed below. I do not know the different meanings of the paths but if I do get them I will list them here on his page.

Nanu is part of the Arara family of Asojano. She is the wife of Asojano and she is the one that aids and nurses Asojano. She walks alongside him when he is in his epidemic mode. Nanu is said to also help Asojano deliver the cadavers to ile Ikú (cemetery). She is received with Asojano and Afra. Her mysteries are kept in a black terra cotta pot just like with Asojano. She resides in Dahomey alongside with the family of Asojano. Her color is entirely black as she is represented by a dark woman dressed entirely in all black. She as any Asojano family takes an Aja as well. Her Aja is usually curved to form 2 breasts. In some houses, Nanu’s color are black with white beads that have dark lines on them. Her sacrificial foods are the same as Asojano and she does talk to her children through divination of her own shells. Usually when one works with Asojano, Nanu is also petitioned as she never leaves his side.

~ THE HISTORY OF CANDLE BURNING IN SPELL WORKS ~                     Candle Magic is one form of magic and is a force that combines psychic energy with the powers of the will to produce supernatural effects. Candles have a long history in religion worship, magic & folklore. They provide light, thus illuminating the darkness and repelling evil spirits while attracting benevolent ones.  In liturgy, they are offerings of fealty to a deity, in magic they are used in various spells & rituals while in folklore they are associated with the dead.

Candles have a unique place in our society today, and are also an incredible link with our past. Unlike anything else, candles convey messages of romance, warmth, spirituality, secret wishes and brightness, all with the simple construct of wax and wick. Embraced by almost every faith, creed and nationality, there is something special about a solitary flame and the energy exchange that it puts forth. It touches our souls. Who among us has not been be touched by the commonality of candles in our religions? People of all faiths and walks of life, and many different creeds, can join together in a candlelight vigil to grieve, or come together in prayer. Candles are unique tools indeed to link mankind to the Divine.

Candles are and always will be a path of light through our lives for it has roots stretching back to ancient times as a part of both religious ceremonies and magical rites.  They are the symbol of peace, warmth, the link that unites us with the divine and keep us away from turmoil and hate. Sweetness surrounds us when we light a candle and thru its light, we ask the Creator to grant us a wish, purification of our actions and the redemption of our sins.

Lightning a candle is not only applying the match to the wick, it  is the faith and understanding of the act we are burning candles for magical effect, spell-casting, and as an adjunct to prayer.  That small light is what bonds us with God. Candles are a tool that helps us to achieve peace of mind, tranquility, a wish, a beacon that shines thru darkness.  The brighter a candle light is, the more efficient its spiritual help.

In the old days, it was common to light a candle throughout the night in order to keep away the demons and evil influences.  Also in some passages of the Leviticus, it is said God has talked to Moses asking about an offering of fire for seven consecutive days, and there are some people that still follow this tradition, same as when a nine days candle is offered to a recent departed relative or loved one.

The Egyptians have been credited for both the inventive use of soaking pithy reeds in animal fats for “rushlights”, and the early use of beeswax. As early as 3000 BC, beeswax candles looking pretty much the same as our beeswax candles do today–cone shaped and with a reed as a wick, have been found placed in tombs of rulers. Romans quickly adopted and improved the methods of candle making, adding a “wick” of woven fibers. Romans used these “candles” to illuminate their homes and places of worship. Although many ancient cultures also used clay type oil lamps for illumination, the principles were the same, a “wick” usually made of flax to hold the flame and “fuel” of animal fat, plant oils (such as olive oil) or beeswax. The word “candle” comes to us from the Latin candere, meaning “to shine.”

Throughout time, man decided that if fire was essential for surviving, it was also essential for his spiritual and religious needs.  If you are feeling nervous, desperate, upset, take a white candle (the candle for all saints) look for a room that is the less cluttered room in the house.  Make sure to close the curtains and with devotion and respect, light the white candle, and sit.  Look at the flame, how it shines its light all around the room and slowly consumes.  Soon you will feel relaxed, your nerves will calm down and slowly you will be receiving answers or spiritual help.

This light represents purity, the honest truth; shadows represent lies and deception, good against evil.Candles were used in the Roman times of persecution against the first Christians, therefore, their use in the Catholic Church ceremonies.

The purpose of lightning a candle may have several meanings:

*Light the path for the souls

*Be successful in a difficult love affair

*Peace within the home and family

*To learn the truth

*To determine a change in luck

*To help someone develop spiritual powers

*As protection against evil spirits

*To help a marriage that has lost its harmony

*To help a dear departed relative

*To pay homage to the saints or thank them for a favor granted

*To have a safe and lucky trip

*To help us to get rid of an undesirable person, physically and spiritually

~ SIGNIFICANCE OF THE COLORS OF CANDLES IN SPELLWORKS~                           The major most important influence in the selection of candles for the use in spellworks has been The Master Book of Candle Burning by Henri Gamache. Candles in their mystic symbolism have a direct reference related with the primary colors

Red: Love in all its subtle, delicate and sublime expression.  Love: strong and conceived with power and force; permanent, unbreakable, capable of overcoming all obstacles, tenacity and complete.

Blue: Possibility and hope.  As the color of the celestial arch of heaven this color represents a compendium of all the aspirations of the human being than can be brought to reality through spiritual harmony. Devotion and security in its intimate expression.

Yellow: Color of nervousness, insecurity, disorientation. Voluble, changing but with visualization, perception very delicate.  Candles are lit to the saints, and they have their colors.

As stated before, if you light a candle without faith and conviction, you will not succeed.

~ THE VARIOUS CANDLES USED IN SPELLWORKS ~

Candles sizes vary in reference to their use and purpose, the biggest being the ones used in wedding ceremonies, to bring peace in the homes, move to better conditions in life, bring peace to a person are known as Altar Candles or Jumbo Candles  9” tall 1 1/2’ round.

As early as the 1930’s spiritual suppliers offered occult/spiritual workers figural or “image” candles for special uses. These candles were more expensive that the plain offertory candles but were used when workers were performing unusual or extremely strong spells, because their visual symbolism is easy to see and by carving names or other features in them, they can be personalized to represent individuals. Candles that are made to represent human figure – man or woman – can be used for good or bad, depending of the use and additional objects that surround them. For instance: for negative magick and evil: pins and needles to drive them mad, black arts oils, stones and crushed or broken glass to block their paths and black pepper to unleashed violence.

In addition to figure candles we have:

*Double Action Reversible Candles

*Seven Day Knob Candles

*Seven Wishes Glass Encased Candle

*Votive candles

*Tea lights

*Religious Novena Glass Candles

*Vigil Glass Encased Candles

*Unlabeled Plain Glass Encased Color Candles

Anointed and dedicated to the individual purpose they serve, they serve as constant reminders that it is the “religion” and “honoring” that is daily of your focus, regardless as to whether or not there is a spell candle present on the altar.

Votives are an excellent choice for candle magick work. Most often when you think of votives, you think of their association with Catholic mass and services. A Mass offered for a votum, is aspecial intention. So we frequently find in prayers the expression, votiva dona “gifts offered with desire [of receiving grace in return]”.

Votives have even derived their name from Latin “Votum” which means prayer, wish, desire/vow, promise to God. I like to think they are superb beacons and messengers. They are quick (usually can be burned completely in an evening or a day) and usually inexpensive. Those handy little glass votive holders are easy to be found and really contain the wax so you usually burn the entire candle without much waste at all. For this reason I find them exceptional value-wise and extremely handy to have around because they store easily and make “quick work” of things. Take comfort in the fact that many church sanctuaries also use votives for the parishioners to light for rememberences and special prayers. Because they are small but stocky, you may find it helpful to inscribe a small sigil, rune or magickal symbol on them.

Tapers are wonderful to work with as well. Quite often you can find excellent quality tapers on sale when stores change their stocks. As they are widely available in a variety of colors. Because they may be fragile and can break, long slender tapers should be carefully stored. Due to this fragility, they are best left either unscribed or with minimal inscription and enjoyed in a elegant standard type candleholder or some beautiful ritual candleholders.

Short squat pillars, mini-pillars and the larger column candles offer a unique opportunity because they can not only be inscribed with many magickal sigils, runes or drawings, but offer enough surface area to often etch in or write out the entire working. In fact, you may come across a need to not only work out prose on paper, but feel compelled to inscribe the entire candle with it. Even if left uncarved, multi-hour candles like these can continue to burn with the same energy you need daily until the entire candle is burned if you have a particular working that you know will take some time.

The last one listed is most excellent for those who want to do works without the 21 questions from friends and family who are wondering what your doing. But these candles can also be used to do good, providing they are surrounded with good and positive objects.  It also depend the seriousness, dedication and sincere invocation put into it.

Prayers, invocations and reading the Bible is important for doing this kind of work, since the candle is a spiritual link to God. Candles are used mostly by those who want to succeed financially in life, a lover who has gone astray, a household/family or relative in distress. It is necessary to study the Table of Color of Candles and work with them accordingly to their own personal needs.

When doing spiritual work with a candle, a wooden table is the best, since it is a good spiritual conductor. Some people sprinkle the altar with Holy Water while praying to the “Righteous Judge” so their prayers will be heard. Black candles used in spiritual works are used to drive away enemies, break couples, confuse, using oils of Confusion, I can and you can not, or Go Away or others.

~ THE USE OF THE DEVIL CANDLE IN SPELLWORKS ~

Many Occult and ATR practioners consider the devil to be a conjurer and to have him on one’s side is to be helped by the master of all the arts. Some devil or Satan candles as it is known as come in the shape of the devil with a trident in his hand and surrounded by flames.  These candles are burned on the altar along with the spell you are casting in order to obtain his aid.

The devil candle also comes in various colors and used for various spellworks:

*Red Devil Candles are used to sexual domination spells or revenge

*Green Devil Candles are used to make someone pay money that is owed and also to obtained money without much work.

*Black Devil Candles are used to drive unwanted associates away and to cause harm upon an enemy.

When used in benificiel rituals the Devil candle is burned only during the daylight. It is anointed with Black Arts oil and placed on the altar facing the wall. A wish is made and the candle is lit and burned for one hour. After this beginning ritual to gain the aid of the master conjurer any other ritual can be performed.

When used in hexing rituals, crossing, revenge, etc., the Devil candle is burned only at night.  The Devil candle is anointed with any jinxing oil that corresponds with the spell that is being performed and placed on the altar facing forward. Supplications are made to him for help in achieving whatever the following ritual is designed for.   After the candle is lit you may begin your ritual. The candle is lit and allowed to burn through the night. *IMPORTANT: when leaving a candle to burn overnight it is important to take precautions to make sure that any spell work does not turn into a tragedy.  When burning figure candles of any kind it is best that you have a heat resistant bowl to put them in and make sure that you keep your pets away from your work space so they don’t knock them over.*

Remember though that with these “devil” candles and symbolism the idea in Occult and other ATR practices is not actually calling upon a demonic or evil spirit per se but a “hot” spirit.  In Haitian Vodou these aggressive spirits are known as djabs.  Hot and aggressive spirits are worked with a lot in ATRs hence the reason you’ll find images of the devil used to represent them.

What does the devil represent in people’s minds apart from evil?  PASSION, Lust, Quick TEMPER, FIRE, Aggression, Trickery, Impatience, Carnal Desires, HEAT, QUICKNESS & Ability to work FAST, Control, Domination, you get the idea… The Devil embodies these ideas and this is the kind of force we need at times to get things moving.  Demons can be worked with and similar imagery can be used to represent them.

Every worker needs to have at least a couple of aggressive spirits who get things done when the time is right because sometimes Spirit takes too long.  At times your spirits may work too slow or decide not to work for you in certain situations especially those that may need a quick solution.  That’s where the hot spirits come in.  You can find them in many places especially the crossroads and graveyard.  If you work with a spirit from the graveyard usually the ones who died badly or lived bad lives (murderer, thief, etc) will work best.  Even though you can work with this energy I’m not suggesting that you take it lightly because with these spirits just as they are mad and HOT-tempered they can lash out at you so you have to be careful when doing this kind of work.

~ PREPARING A CANDLE IN SPELLWORKS~

Dressing a candle is using the appropriate oil that goes with the ritual.  Some practitioners in the Caribbean or Brazil, tie around the candle strands of hair or pieces of the clothes of the intended person or victim.  They can also use a piece of paper with the name and tie it around the candle and add the appropriate oils. When anointing the candle with oil, it is customary to hold it in the center and work from the center upwards, and then from the center downwards.

Offertory and figural candles are dressed by rubbing them: upward to draw and downward to repel with the appropriate occult oil. Some practitioners then sprinkle them with sachet powders or roll them in finely cut occult herbs selected for their specific spiritual powers. But if you know the astral color of the person, you can tie it to the candle and work the oil same as stated above.

Candles that are marked on behalf of a client is done in the form of a petition which consists of writing a person’s name and their request on a paper usually parchment and placing it under a candle.

Papers placed under a candle is known as “Burning a candle for him/her.”  Placing court summonses under the candle of a saint before going to court is one way of petitioning the saint for aid in the matter. Pictures can also be placed in front of or under a candle depending on the purpose of the candle spell and oil used.

Free-standing candles are better known as pillar and taper candles which are placed on candle holders.  When working with pillar candles it is always best to put a plate under them in order to avoid the wax getting onto your altar as hard wax tends to be a bit of a hassel to remove later not to mention the fact that their colors tend to stain altar cloths and if the altar is made of wood like most are the wood gets stained as well.

Tapers are best for spellworks that require various candles to be lit at once but always remember check the positioning of the candles prior to lighting. They should not set too close together that they effect they way their neighbor burns and should not be close to anything that may catch on fire.

Some candle spells require that the candle be burned a certain length at a time or a certain amount of hours (usually one hour) for several days. In other spells, the candle is required to move closer to or away from other candles over the course of the work.

When working with glass encased candles it is best to let them burn straight through but if you wish to burn them for a short period of time then relight them you may wish to have fireplace matches handy to relight them as the wick gets further down into the candle and those short matches no longer reach. Some practioners will light the candle first followed by the incense while others will light the incense first then candle. How you choose to do this it up to you.

~ READING SIGNS OF CANDLE BURNING IN SPELLWORKS ~

When performing spells with candles it is very important to pay attention to the manner in which the candle burns. Practioners of African-American and Afro-Caribbean traditions and Spiritists who light candles for clients often pay attention to and make a habit of noticing the manner in which the candles burn so that they can draw conclusions about their end results and if more work will be needed in order to insure success.

The following are the most common and effective ways to interpret Candles while I am sure there are many different other forms of interpretation for how they burn. If you follow the below suggestions, you will see fast results in your magical endeavors:

NORTHERN MOVEMENT OF FLAME: Something physical is manifesting so you will have to work for what you wish to achieve

EASTERN MOVEMENT OF FLAME: Something mental is manifesting so you need to think things through and have patience in situations.

SOUTHERN MOVEMENT OF FLAME: Something intense and short lived is manifesting. Success comes rapidly and with intensity

WESTERN MOVEMENT OF FLAME: The manifestation of strong magical intervention. The issue is too emotional and you are too involved. Step away for a while and clear your thoughts.

IF THE SMOKE WAFTS TOWARDS YOU: That your prayer has been heard and will be granted quickly.

IF THE SMOKE WAFTS AWAY FROM YOU: Perserverence will be needed to achieve your desire

IF THE SMOKE TURNS TOWARDS YOUR RIGHT: You will need to use a bit of patience with success coming from using your head.

IF THE SMOKE TURNS TOWARDS YOUR LEFT: You are becoming too emotionally involved with the situation and are in danger of subconsciously sabotaging yourself so that your prayer will not be answered.

THE FLAME FLARES, DIPS, GUTTERS AND FLARES AGAIN REPEATEDLY:

This is often seen as a sign that the person on whom you are working is subconsciously aware of your actions and may be responding partially, then fighting off your influence, then responding again. Be sure, however, that this behavour of the candle flame is not caused by the mundane fact that you have set the candle in a draft. If necessary, move the candle somewhere else and see if the repeated flaring up and dying away stops; if it does not stop, then it is to be considered a sign, and not simply a physical coincidence.

THERE IS A DIRTY, BLACK, SOOTY BURN ON THE GLASS CANDLE:

This means things are going to go hard — the spell may not work, the blessing may fail, the person is in deeper stress or trouble than you thought. If the work is being done against an enemy and the enemy’s candle burns sooty and dirty, then it is likely that the enemy is fighting your influences.

THE CANDLE GIVES A CLEAN, EVEN BURN:

That all will go well with the spell and that one will most likely get what one wishes for. If a glass encased candle burns and leaves no marks on the glass, that is best. If a free-standing candle leaves little or no residue, that is best.

A GLASS ENCASED CANDLE BURNS HALF CLEAN AND HALF DIRTY:

This indicates that there is hidden trouble with the person for whom the lights have been set or that someone is working against your wishes. Things will not go well at first, but by repeated spells you may get them to go better.

WHY DOES THE CANDLE HAVE MORE THEN ONE FLAME?

The Center or main flame represents the client. If candle is used for protection then the ones around the center represent the enemies. If it is to dominate then it means that the person is being helped by people.

WHY IS THE CANDLE FLAME FLICKERING?

This is a sign that there are spirits present.

WHY IS THE ENTIRE CANDLE INCLUDING THE WICK ON FIRE ?

The spell is being fought off by guardian spirits but more then likely the spell will work.

WHY DID THE CANDLE FLAME GO OUT DURING THE SPELL?

Another type of spell must be performed

CAN A CANDLE BE EXTINGUISHED AND THEN RELIGHT?

For the most part once a candle has been light is should remain so until the spell is completed. If you feel uncomfortable about leaving while a candle is lit then place the candle in the sink, tub or shower.

WHAT IF A CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED AND THEN RELIGHTS ITSELF?

Your guardian spirits do not want you to turn the candle off because they detecting something good or bad and cannot effectivly assist you with the candle out.

WHAT IF A SEVEN DAY CANDLE BURNS OUT BEFORE THE SEVEN DAYS?

The spell is working fast and another must be lit immediately.

WHY DID THE CANDLE EXPLODE?

The candle prevented something from attacking you and/or alot of negative energy has been directed towards you or the client

WHAT DOES IT MEAN IF THE CANDLE DOES NOT BURN?

A spiritual cleansing must be done before before beginning the spell or you picked up a bad candle and need to replace it with another one.

WHAT IF THE CANDLE FLAME GOES OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF A SPELL?

If the spell is for self protection, this means that while you were performing the spell, witchcraft was directed your way and your spirits were unable to fight it off. If the spell was directed toward another individual, their spirits were able to fight the attack off and has alarmed the individual. Another type of spell must be performed.

WHY DOES THE CANDLE HAVE A HIGH FLAME?

The spell is going to work and be effective. A candle with a tall flame indicated the arrival of a stranger.

WHY DOES THE CANDLE HAVE A LOW FLAME?

The candle is working to remove obstacles blocking your way.

WHY DID THE CANDLE BURN THE GLASS TOTALLY BLACK?

If after the candle burns down and the glass it totally black it means that someone is throwing negativity at you and a cleansing of yourself and your home is needed.

WHY THE CANDLE IS BURNING THE TOP HALF OF THE GLASS BLACK ?

The spell was met with resistance before it began to work.

WHY THE CANDLE IS BURNING THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE GLASS BLACK ?

The spell was met with resistance at the end but cleared the way.

WHY THE CANDLE IS ONLY BURNING ON ONE SIDE ?

The spell was only partially effective which means either the wrong type of candle or candle dressing was used or it was made poorly at the candle factory.

WHAT IT MEANS IF THE GLASS CRACKS ?

The candle broke the negativity in the environment as a result from strong pressure from secret enemies working against you.

A FREE-STANDING CANDLE THAT RUNS AND MELTS ALOT WHILE BURNING:

This gives you an opportunity to observe the flow of wax for signs. For instance, if you are burning a bride-and-groom type candle for love, and the woman’s wax runs all over the man’s, then the woman desires the man more than he desires her. If you are burning a green money candle and the wax melts and runs down onto the monetary offering, then the spell is “eager to work” and the candle is “blessing the money.” Some people try to influence the way melting wax runs. They do this as an intentional part of the spell-work, to increase the likelihood that things will go the way they want. Others prefer to let nature take its course and to watch running wax for signs, without interfering in its movements.

A FREE-STANDING CANDLE THAT BURNS DOWN TO A PUDDLE OF WAX:

When this happens, most workers will examine the shape of the wax for a sign that may suggest an outcome regarding the matter at hand.

A CANDLE THAT LETS OUT ALOT OF SMOKE BUT BURNS AT THE END:    Again, hidden trouble or someone working against your wishes. Things will not go well at first, but with repeated work you will overcome.

IF THE CANDLE GOES OUT BEFORE COMPLETELY BURNING:

This is a bad sign because it indicates that someone very strong is working against you or against the person on whose behalf you are setting the lights. You will have to start the entire job over from the beginning and you may need to use stronger means than you first employed.

IF THE CANDLE TIPS OVER AND FLAMES UP INTO A FIRE HAZARD:

Not only will the spell probably fail but there may be increased danger ahead for you or the client. In order to accomplish anything, you will have to start the entire job over from the beginning — but first do a thorough Uncrossing spell for everyone involved and ritually clean the premises before setting any more lights. Also make sure to keep small children and pets away from your workspace and put the candle in a heat resistant bowl.

IF THE CANDLE BURNS UP OVERLY FAST?

Generally a fast burn is good, but an overly-fast burn (compared to other times you have used the same kind of candle) means that although the work will go well, it may not last long. You might have to repeat the job at a later date. If you have set lights for several people and one person’s candle burns faster than the others, then that person is most affected by the work, but the influence may not last long enough to produce a permanent change.

HOW DO I PUT A CANDLE FLAME OUT ?

Candle flames can be extinguished by using a candle snuffer which is the best option, by pinching the flame out with your fingers or by waving a fan. NEVER BLOW OUT A CANDLE!!

HOW CAN I MAKE MY CANDLE SPELLS MOST EFFECTIVE?

By using the appropriate incense, oils, powders, poppets and other instruments in your spellwork BUT above all else it is YOUR FAITH in your own work.

~ THE DISPOSAL OF USED CANDLE WAX IN SPELLWORKS~

In the occult and many of the African traditions the disposal of the remaining wax if any depends on the type of spell used and what the worker instructed the client to do if the client was to work the spell themselves.

Should the purpose of the spell be to bring about blessings, money drawing, love drawing or home protection, the materials can be wrapped in a cloth in the color of the spell and bury them in the yard. For businesses they can be buried at the front door to draw customers, money and success.

If the purpose of the spell is to remove a hex or a crossed condition the materials are to be wrapped in a black cloth and thrown into running water that runs away from the house or if you can toss it or bury it in the yard of the person who sent it. You can also take it to the crossroads and toss it onto the center of the crossroads over your left shoulder and walk away without turning back. It is important to never bury remains from negative spells in one’s own yard.

To get someone to move, you can divide the materials such as Hot Foot Powder with the remains of the candle and beginning with the nearest crossroads closest to where the person lives, toss the ingredients then travel away from their house dropping off pieces of the material at every crossroad one encounters until you have gotten rid of all the materials used in the spell. This spell is done easier in the country then in the city cause crossroads tend to be several miles apart from one another where as in the city the crossroads then be almost one top of the other. When performing this spell in the city you would only count intersections with traffic lights. This is a great spell to perform if you have happen to be one of those people that live in the country and have to drive an hour or more to get to work.

Should the intention of the spell be of the utmost serious of nature, use as irreparably harmful and especially if the spell contains the infamous graveyard dirt or goofer dust one can dispose of the material in a graveyard. The wax and other remnants are placed in a miniature coffin, buried, and marked by a miniature headstone with the enemy’s name on it.

When setting such a spell to rest, many workers also sprinkle a mixture of sulphur powder and salt around the grave, then walk home and don’t look back. If you cannot gain access to a graveyard at night since many of the modern graveyards have fences all around the property it is best to just place the materials inside a paper bag and toss it over the fence while walking by.

~ CANDLES AND DREAM INTERPRETATION IN SPELLWORKS~

Have you ever dreamt about being pursued, it means there are those wishing you ill and working against you.  On a Thursday night, light a yellow candle and ask St. Lazarus to clear your way and take all those bad thoughts away.  If you have a statue or stamp of St. Lazarus, put a small glass next to him with rum and smoke him with tobacco.

Unable to wake up from you dream and trying to? It means someone you think as a close friend is working against you.  Find out your color and astral sign, light the candle and ask your Spiritual guide for help.

Dreaming about water, running under the rain, house full of water, unable to close the water faucet? This dream means the presence of many negative spirits that surround you and your Spiritual Guide is fighting against. Water represents that they are trying to “drown” you in despair and problems. Before going to bed, put a glass of water next to your bed, light a white candle in honor of our Lady of Mercy, and a red candle to St. Barbara and ask your guide to give you strength and guidance to defeat your enemies.  Then blow the candles but leave the water, and go to sleep.

Dreaming about being lost? In a place you do not know and have no idea where to go? It foretells of forthcoming problems.  Get a red apple and light a red candle, put these items next to St. Barbara’s image or stamp and ask her for protections and guidance.

Dream about seeing somebody’s spirit but could not see the face?  That you talked to him/her but got no answer? It means, there is a spirit close to you that wants to help you, but needs light, therefore it can not reveal himself/herself to you. Take a glass of water and put it in a high place, light a blue candle and ask Our Lady of Regla (Yemaya) to light the way for this spirit that wants to help you.

Dream about being in a place you have been before? Everything looks familiar?  It is a dream about re-incarnation.  You are re-living your past life and while this is happening, your spirit is wandering and meeting with things that happened in the past.  In order to protect you spirit, light a white candle for your Spiritual Guide.

If you dream about water falling on you and you can’t get away from it, it means sudden changes, instability.  If you want these moves to be positive for you, place on a white saucer or dish, a white candle in honor of Obatala and an apple for St. Barbara. When lightning the white candle invoke your Spirit Guide’s for protection and help Say the prayer to St. Barbara.Do this for three days

If you dreamt about somebody next to your bed, but could no see his/her face, even though you dreamt it, it means a spirit is trying to warn you about danger.  This spirit needs help, light a white candle, while praying” Our Father” on his/her behalf.

If dreamt about being in a place that has antiquities, that you know that in a certain house lived certain person, that you walked out of that house in you wedding gown, it means you are re-living your past. If you want to keep having these kind of dreams, light a white candle and ask your Spiritual Guide to help you and show them to you, it can help you in the future.  These are very sweet dreams.

Chango is one of the most talked about and most favorable orisha of Santeria. Chango also know as Shango, Sango, Alufina, Xango in Brazil, was a great warrior. He is the orisha of the thunder and thunderbolt. He is the thunderbolt that falls from the sky upon the land. When you hear the loud sound of thunder roaring through the heavens, it is Chango that is riding his white horse looking to serve justice. Chango is seen as a tall handsome man with an extreme physique. He is always dressed in satin outfits with his tiger skin wrapped around him. His crown is always firm on his head and it is always shining. His colors are red and white and in the home of a priest, he lives in a wooden batea (vessel), where his secrets and implements are kept. Chango loves to dance and he knows how to hype up a party. When he arrives, the party has just begun as he will dance and impress everyone that is there. He is also the owner of the bátá drums (the double headed drums in Santeria). When he finishes his dance, he is quick to grab the drums to show his skills.

Chango is a womanizer. He loves to flirt with all women. His dance is very seductive in which he uses to seduce his woman onlookers. Chango had many relations with females from every village. Maybe out of all the orishas he had the most with all and any woman. He had 3 wives that he loved dearly, each for their own special characteristics. Ochun, Obba and Oya. He loved Ochun for her flirtatious and cunning ways, as she kept the lust between them. Whenever Chango needed that spark for lust he will look for Oshun sometimes at a festival where should we be dancing and flirting amongst all the orishas. Oshun would bedazzle him with her exotic dance.

Obba he loved dearly for she was the way a wife is idolized. The relation he had with Obba was so pure that he made her his legitamate wife and queen of his village in Oyo. She was the one who tended to his every need and made sure that the king was satisfied as the way he should be as well with her cooking as she knew how to get to a mans stomach. She kept the castle clean and organized and for that Olofi created the first marriage to be recognized. Due to a trick by his jealous mistress Oya (before Oya and Chango were married), Obba did something so disgusting that the king never forgave her and that ended their marriage.

Last Oya, who he stole from his brother Ogun, loved because she did not fear anyone. Oya was the one that gave him that life and spark that he needed. She always surprised him. She was a warrior that could stand right next to the king Chango. She would go with him into any and all battles that Chango had. It is said that Oya would ride on her horse first before any battle that Chango had. If you look today, when a storm is approaching, lightning which is also Oya, flashes across the sky, then soon after you will hear the sounds of Chango’s horse galloping through the skies which is the thunder. If you’re lucky enough, you will also see Chango throwing a thunderbolt down to the earth.

Pataki of Chango

One day the great orisha Chango was playing the bátá drums in a nearby village. Chango as usual was beating the drums and he had the party going. He would take a heavy drink of his oti and beat harder and faster on the drums. Everyone was dancing and enjoying themselves. Yemaya came to the festivities and she was dancing and enjoying herself alongside with everyone present at the party, while Elegua who was already there was talking and playing tricks on the villagers. Elegua left the party for a moment and arrived back as it was finishing with some gossip that he had seen. When the party finished he called his good friend Chango over and told him the gossip that he saw.

Elegua told Chango that he left and stopped at Obatala and Yembo’s house to see how they were doing. He told him that he was talking to Osun (the last orisha received alongside with “The Warriors” represented by a rooster standing on a silver stick) about situations that were occurring in Obatala’s house. Elegua as devious as he is started to give Osun oti to see if he could keep talking. Just as he planned, Osun talked and talked and told Elegua what was going on. He told him that Ogun would come to the house drunk when Baba (another form to call a father orisha) was not there and speak rough to his mother Yembo. Osun went to say that this has been happening for awhile now and that today out of all days, Ogun came very drunk. As the two were conversing Ogun came by staggering and swaying his machete. He walked right past Elegua and Osun and did not even see them. He barged into the house and grabbed Yembo. He started to rip off her clothes and threw her onto the bed where she and Obatala lay. Yembo who was helpless, screamed and called for help. Right before Ogun could mount her, the great Osagrinan (a path of Obatala) appeared. He screamed out to Ogun to stop and to get out. Ogun out of shame left to the woods never to stop working for his actions that he did. Elegua who saw this was very upset that Ogun violated Yembo and the great Obatala.

Chango hearing all of this from Elegua was in a rage and he knew that his friend Elegua wouldn’t lie about this as he knew that Elegua knew all. His rage turned into fury to hear the disrespect Ogun did to there mother Yembo. He immediately jumped on his horse and rode to the house of Ogun. When he arrived he saw that Ogun was not there but he did see the beautiful Oya wielding the new sword that her husband Ogun made for her. He has seen her in many festivals and at the marketplace but never spoke to her because of the relationship she had with his brother Ogun. Chango had a spark in his eye and proceeded to walk up to Oya. When Oya saw Chango she kept her eyes off of him as she too was infatuated with Chango but never dear follow the situation, because she was faithful to Ogun. Chango fixed his shirt and moustache and approached Oya with a great swag.

Oya could not resist his swag and she looked at him directly into his eyes. She was in a trance as she noticed the gleam in the irresistible Chango. Chango asked for his brother in which Oya told him that he has not been home for hours. Chango asked Oya for a drink of oti and Oya immediately ran and gave it to him. She knew that he was a king and whatever the king wanted he must have. Oya gave him his drink and Chango took a sip of it and placed in on the table. Oya asked him if there was anything else that he requested. Chango smiled and grabbed Oya very softly and gave her a kiss. Chango’s passion rose from within him straight to his lips that now caressed the lips of Oya and she fell at that moment in the arms of Chango. The great king made passionate love to Oya in Ogun’s house. The same disrespect that he tried to perform on his mother Yembo would be the same disrespect he would perform in the house of his brother Ogun.

Hours later Ogun arrived to his house, ashamed of his actions toward his mother and father. He was picking up his tools to begin work as that was his punishment he put on himself in front of his father Obatala and Olofi. He noticed that the house was empty and his wife Oya was no where in sight. He called for her but there was no answer. He noticed that there was an empty cup on the table with some left over oti in it and wondered whose it was. Ogun baffled, went to his room and noticed the bed was in a mess. Since he had been drinking heavily he did not register on what he was seeing. When he came out of the room, he saw his friend Elegua sitting by the door. He asked Elegua what happened and Elegua with a stern voice reminded him on the shameful act that he did today. Ogun who was hung over did not want to remember what happened earlier but wanted to know what happened to his wife Oya. Elegua smirked and told him a tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye. Ogun did not know what Elegua was saying asked him what was he talking about. Elegua told Ogun that where ever Chango is at, Oya is very near. Ogun now put the pieces together, grabbed his machete and charged out of his house running to the house of his brother Chango.

Ogun ran and ran all the way to the gates of Chango’s castle. He demanded to be let into the kingdom. Chango’s guards notified Chango of the noise that Ogun was making outside. Chango stepped on his balcony and asked Ogun what was the ruckus and disrespect he was doing outside of his house. Ogun said the disrespect was he Chango coming to his house and taking his wife Oya. Chango brought Oya onto the balcony and showed her to her husband. Ogun’s rage grew more and demanded Chango to release her. Oya told Ogun that she was not there by force but on her own will. Ogun stated to her that she was under a potion that Chango gave her. Oya told Ogun that Chango did not give her a potion and this was a day that she yearned for since the first time she saw Chango. Ogun repeated to her that Chango did something to her. Ogun turned and looked at Chango and asked him why did he disrespect him for, come to his house and take his wife. Chango with a roar told Ogun that the same way he barged into the house of his parents and violated his mother, this was pay back. And with that said and done Chango leaped from the balcony that was high up in his castle straight to where Ogun was at. Before Chango touched the floor a thunderbolt landed right next to Ogun that made him fall back quite a few feet. Chango and Ogun started a battle that lasted for hours. As Chango’s guards watched in confusion because they did not want to get involved between these 2 brothers wrath. The 2 orishas fought against each other. Chango threw thunderbolt after thunderbolt hitting the ground where Ogun’s feet were. Ogun with each leap got close to Chango and swayed his machete hitting Chango. These 2 orishas gave each other bruise after bruise. Oya seeing all of this wanted this to stop, so she blew her winds so far and fast until her cries reached to the ears of Obatala. She then glided on towards them both.

Obatala who heard Oya’s cries came fast on his horse to see what was going on. When he reached Chango’s castle he saw the 2 orishas fighting each other with Oya in the middle. Oya stood in the middle of them both trying to stop the battle but they both did not listen to her. The great Obatala approached them both and as he is the king and orisha of peace, his soft voice brought a silence over the kingdom of Chango. He demanded both of them to stop the brawl. Chango seeing his father threw himself at the great orisha of the white cloth in homage. Obatala lifted Chango up and gave him a hug. Ogun asked his father Obatala that why he was being so nice and humble to Chango when it was Chango that started all of this. Obatala asked Ogun in what way did Chango disrespect him. Ogun went and told him that Chango went to his house and took his wife Oya from him and now she is with him. Obatala turned and asked Chango if this was true and Chango proclaimed that it was. Chango then turned and told Obatala that it was revenge. Ogun screamed revenge and brought his machete high over his head to strike Chango. Immediately Chango raised his oshé to strike back. Obatala raised his hands and both orishas brought down there weapons. Chango told Ogun that it was revenge for him going to there fathers house and taking advantage on there mother Yembo. Chango said the same way you went in and took advantage, I went to your house and took advantage on your wife in which now she is mines.

Obatala turned to Chango and told him that 2 wrongs don’t make a right and that was wrong on what he did. He continued to tell him that he shouldn’t have gone and barged into Ogun’s house and take Oya from him. Elegua who was present as usual bowed his head to Obatala and told him that Chango did not barge in that Oya let him in with no problem. Oya stated that it was true. She turned to her former husband Ogun and told him that she always loved and respected him but that Chango brought to her a wild fire passion that she has been yearning for a long time and it is with Chango she is going to stay with. Obatala told Chango to take Oya inside and he told Ogun to go back home and think of all the defects that he did today. Chango asked Obatala why was he so easy on his brother Ogun. Chango asked where was his punishment in which Obatala said Ogun already has received his punishment. Chango turned and took Oya inside and peace was brought back to the kingdom of Chango.

Chango’s feast day is December 4th. He is the owner of fire and passion as well. Chango loves to drink, dance and eat. His sacrificial animals are rams, roosters, turtles, cornish hens and guinea hens. His favorite food is cornmeal with okra and he loves red apples and green bananas. He is the orisha that brings justice to mankind. Chango rides day and night looking to bring justice to his father Obatala and Olofi. The drums beat in his heart. He loves everything perfect and nothing deformed. His children are very outgoing people. They love to drink and party and they have a passion and fire on their tongues that they conquer all battles when they use their head. Chango is friends to all the orishas except to his brother Ogun that they are constantly in battle whenever they are in front of each. But never the less, Chango aides and loves the children of Ogun and vice versa. Chango is a great friend and ally to have in your corner. He keeps a close eye on his children and he protects them to the fullest from everything.

Chango is able to breathe fire from his mouth. He found out the secret from the herb orisha Osain who gave him Abocun which is the secret of the fire. Chango keeps Abocun deep in his mortar locked in a safe room. When Chango is going to battle he first goes to Abocun to gain the secret of the fire. He puts it on his tongue and is instantly able to blow fire from his mouth. He then rides out with his daughter Aiña, who is the heat of the fire. Abocun was found by Oya who was snooping around Chango’s castle and saw the lock door. As the air we breathe she passed right through and put the secret of Abocun on her tongue and from that day she was able to breathe fire from her mouth.

In the religion Palo Mayombe, Chango is represented by the palo deity Siete Rayos who share the same characteristics as the orisha Chango. They are not the same but the share a lot of similarities.

While a storm is going on where there is lightning and thunder, you should always salute Chango with his salutations. “Kabi O Sile” The great king. If you see a thunderbolt hit the ground, after the rain has subdued, go to where the bolt hit and dig a hole. It is said that he leaves traces of his thunderbolt through a black stone that is called and odu ara (lightning bolt stone). He loves this stone and all of his followers wear this stone around their necks or on them to represent the orisha.

Dada y Ibañi

Dada and Ibañi are the orisha of new born children. Dada and Ibañi are siblings to the orisha Chango. Dada was the orisha who raised her little brother Chango when he was thrown out by Obbatala due to the ordeal that Ogun caused on Yembo. Dada is used to ensure the crown of the priest or priestess. She is received to reaffirm your crown so you do not lose it. She is accompanied by Ibañi, who sits as a crown that was given back to her brother Chango when he lost his head and crown due to hot head. Dada is represented in a wooden vessel similar to the one used by Agallu where her secrets are kept. Her mysteries take a lot of things that are placed inside of this wooden vessel. Ibañi is represented by the crown that sits on top of Dada that is adorned with shells and beads. Her colors are red and white as Chango but they have a specific order in which they go. 2 white followed by 2 red until completion with shells. 6 braids of a girl is also used to adorn the crown of Ibañi. These braids must be from a virgin girl and must be black. On top of the crown, priest adorned it with African grey feathers which show royalty. Inside of Ibañi, the priest will pack it with different secrets and mysteries pertaining to Dada and the guardian angel that originally is crowned on the priest/ess head.

It is said that Dada is a orisha that shouldn’t be given out to everyone because of the simple fact that you are giving your crown to someone else and ultimately you will fall. Especially if you have a specific sign in that you definetly cant give it. This orisha lives on top of Chango 6 months or for the remaining of your life depending on the sign or oddun that you bring with Dada. Her sacrificial animals are the same foods that Chango eats. In some houses, Dada’s mysteries are born but are fed with Obatala and Osun which he is the owner and ruler of all heads whether you are initiated or not. Both procedures are correct. Dada does have children but he is not crowned on the head actually. If there is a child of Dada which is rare and has not been seen in ages, they are initiated into Chango’s realm and are given Dada and Ibañi’s secrets aside and live on top of Chango forever.

One pataki says that Chango had lost his crown due to his stubbornness and a king is not a king without their crown. His sister Dada who she always was with Ibañi, saw the way Chango was not respected as king. Ibañi told Chango that he would be his crown and he will make his crown more fundament. Chango placed Ibañi on his head and walked back into his kingdom where he was noticed as the king once more. Dada helped raise Chango alongside with Maselobi. You can say she was like his nanny but in reality she was his sister.

Oggue

Oggue is the orisha that represents the horns of animals. He lives with Chango or alongside of him. He was a gift that Oya gave to Chango. Oggue is represented by a set of bull horns. He does not mount or get initiated. He was given to Chango because one day Chango’s enemies tried to poison the orisha with a pigeon. When Chango was about to eat the pigeon he grew weak and Oggue knew something was wrong. So Oggue offered to eat the pigeon and when he did he noticed that it was indeed poisoned to kill Chango. From that day forward Chango does not eat pigeon. Who eats pigeon is Oggue for Chango due to that pact that they have. He rumbles over all obstacles that lay in Chango’s path and the path of all initiates who have him. His dance is represented by placing your forefingers on your head and imitating the movement of a bull.

The Ibejis

The Ibejis or the divine twins are 2 of the most adorable orishas in our community. They are small but very powerful. These orishas are given to priest/ess to overcome difficulty within our everyday lives. They are represented by 2 small vessels that are the same and 2 dolls that are also the same. One usually a male and the other a female. The girl is dressed in blue and the boy is dressed in red and white. They both have the necklaces of the 5 major orishas that are given to every new initiate. They love to be kids and toys should be put to them. The Ibejis just at Elegua love cakes and parties and they are summons when something is really hard to obtain. That’s by either throwing them a party in their name or just attending to them.

They do not have children that they are crowned to but it is said and believed that when a mother gives birth to a set of twins, their guardian angel is either Chango or Yemaya. You usually will bring the guardian angel of one of them and if it comes out Chango, the other twin is automatically a child of Yemaya and vice versa. The next child the mother bears following the twins is usually a child of Oshun, due to that Ideu is the third child that Oshun bore after the divine twins.

The twins are children of Oshun with Chango. Oshun became pregnant and stepped out the scene of the orishas to tend to her secret pregnancy. After the twins were born she secretly rushed to her sister Yemaya’s house. Yemaya who was wondering where her sister Oshun was for such a long time greeted her and there is where she found out why Oshun was lost. Oshun told Yemaya that she was too young to nurture for her twins and that Yemaya would be a better mother that can give them all they needed. So Yemaya took them as her own. Oshun as a gift to her kids gave them a necklace of hers.

These twins were said to have defeated Olosi (the devil) by making his life impossible. Olosi was walking the earth planning to attack the humans on earth and the twins who saw Olosi decided to have some fun with him. They attacked him with the sounds of the drums and playful tricks. Every time Olosi would try to chase one, he would disappear and the other one would come out from where he was hiding. Olosi did not know that they were twins, he believed that there was only one. Olosi grew so tired of chasing that he retreated back to where he came from and the twins were praised.

Another story says that one time Obatala’s enemies were trying to kill him for always changing the ways that they were living. His enemies went to Obatala’s cook and bribed him to be on their side. They offered him a better pay and a better life for him. Obatala’s cook gave in and agreed. Obatala is allergic and does not like salt in his foods and that’s how his enemies were going to get rid of Obatala. The twins overheard this and told Obatala what was planned for him. Obatala did an ebbo and found out that it was true what the twins were telling him. For their courageous efforts, Obatala gave them a white bead each in his name.

Their sacrifical foods are male chickens and pigeons. What you give to one you must give to the other. Their sacrificial foods are cooked and served to them on 2 plates. When you want to resolve something with them, you can make a shrine for them and throw them a simple party where other kids are at with cakes, foods, toys and your everyday party favors. But make sure what you serve to the other kids at the party, you must place the same for the Ibejis.

Aiña

Aiña is one of Chango’s children. She is a girl that represents his fire. Not the secret but she represents his fire. She is said just to be like her father and when Chango goes to war, she goes alongside of him burning everything in her path. She eats the same as her father Chango. She lives in a red vessel with her secrets and mysteries. She also takes a guiro where her other secrets are placed. This is said to hang in the house of Chango’s followers but not where anybody walks under. You should keep a glass of water next to Aiña so she can keep the fire out of your house and path. When one is at war, you place Aiña next to Chango and you wear her ceremonial necklace that is made up of fire red beads.

Irawo

This orisha is said to live with either Chango or Orisha Oko. Irawo is represented by a shooting star or comet. It is said that Chango rode Irawo to earth. If you look up in the dark sky of ara onu, you can see Irawo soaring across the sky.

Obacun

He is one of Chango’s guards. He is represented by a wooden statue with an oshé on top of his head. This statues is painted or dressed in red and white and sometimes he is riding a horse. He has his own tureen that sits next to Chango.

Abokun

This is the orisha that is the secret of Chango’s fire that he lets out of his mouth when he is at war or upset.

~ Chamalongo/Obi/Cowrie Shell Readings ~

* © information that is taught to the initiated students of Ye Olde Dark Arts Coven-Tradition once they receive Luceros*

Chamalongos or Kujamputu are the divination tools that a Tata/Yaya Nganga use when working with clients. This method comes from the Congo-Cuban religious practice of Palo Mayombe and  is the primary method used with the spirits and Nkisis.  They are made from a coconut husk that has had the flesh removed, shaped, sanded, prepared and consecrated in a Palo ceremony given only to initiated Tatas and Yayas as it draws upon the spiritual pact made with NOT only the Nfumbe that resides within the Nganga but the Nkisi as well.  This system is primaraly used by initiates that have Luceros in Palo, Eshus, Warriors and of course one of the many different caminos of Eleggua in Lucumi although it is called Obi in this practice.  This is also used in traditional Ifa Orisha practices to speak to the orishas and for ancestral communication

There is also a four cowrie shell system that is used to communicate with the Ancestors  but this also something that is prepared and consecrated in a special ceremony and given only to those that are initiated.  I have seen in some houses where cowrie shells are used instead of Chamalongos and Obi.

How the Chamalongos/Obi/Four Cowrie Shells Work

The Chamalongos are used to answer yes or no questions and do so very effectively so you will pretty much know if you have all the materials needed to cast spell work for clients and that they have been set up properly, the confirmation of messages the spirits have given, if anything has been overlooked and most importantly if the spirits will give permission to proceed with the work and if any other course of action needs to be taken.

The instructions given to the Palero/a by both the Nfumbe and Nkisi are the cornerstone of our spellwork which is why it is essential to confirm that we are interpreting the messages clearly. We also confirm if the instructions given are NOT from a dark spirit, since NOT all spirits are helpful. The answers are given when the chamalongos are tossed on the floor and depending on how the pieces fall the letter is given that is the answer.

How to Conduct a Chamalongo/Cowrie Shell/Obi Reading

The first step before conducting a Chamalongo reading is to set the area of the consultation up and once that is done and you have taken the proper cleansing bath are the prayers that are taught orialy to you by your Padrino/Madrina.  Yeah sure anyone can toss coconut and cowrie shells, but not everyone can take a yes/no line of questioning in the right direction to flesh out all of the details you need for the work to be done right.

The opening prayers start by invoking the authority of  the supreme force of nature that created everything God the Creator (Nsambimpungo in Palo, Olofi in Lukumi) , then on to the special salutations given to spirits you are addressing. The prayer is finished with an identification of yourself by your initiatory name, and a simple explanation of what you are seeking to do.

The most important question asked is always  “Are you willing to assist me with this?” followed by an opening toss of the chamalongos. If the answer is affirmative then proceed with breaking down the situation of the client into a series of simple questions to be ask.  If the questions are too elaborate you will not get the correct response needed and the chamalongos/cowries/obi will be become overheated in which case they must be refreshed or “cooled down”.

The 5 Letters of a Chamalongo/Cowire/Obi Reading

There are 5 primary letters in which the chamalongos speak which are similar to the ones used in both the Lukumi tradition and in the Traditional Ifa Orisha Practices. Below using both the diagrams of the Chamalongos/Obi and the Cowrie shells you can see how they are interpreted.  The the white circles or opened mouths indicate concave-side up, while the dark circles or closed mouthes indicate concave-side down.

oyeku-120x75  (Alafia)  Answer: Yes.  This can be a sign for good health, Peace and Tranquility and Money blockages being removed. If one coconut sits on another it is a special blessing called “Alafia with Ire”. This layout signifies well-being. No need to ask again.

okana-120x76 (Etawa)  Answer: “Weak Yes”.  You need to throw the chamalongos a second time to determine if the answer is yes or no. Now it could be your question may become a strong yes with spiritual work or a cleansing. Or the answer is uncertain or the Spirits are neutral. If Etawe falls there may have been a mistake in the divination procedure or the question may need to be reformulated. It is also possible that the topic of questioning is not the topic of true concern. Offer the spirits a small offering such as rum, honey, palm oil, or tobacco. Ask again, more elaborately.

ejife-120x75 (Ejife)  Answer: Balanced Yes. Ejife is the strongest and most definite answer.  If the two white coconut fall on each other (touch or lay on each other) it is called “Ire” which is especially good blessing. This is a special sign! No need to ask again.

etawa-120x79 (Ocana)  Answer: No. The Reader should reformulate the question so that it can be answered. This is an important letter! First, it says you must give ebbo or sacrifice to your Eggun or Spirit for a positive outcome.

Second, you must ask again, and keep changing the question until the Spirit gives you the root problem. There is a warning here of bad magic or a negative person who is causing problems. Keep asking the Spirit until you discover where the problem lies. Once you have a “Yes” answer ( Is it my brother? Is it my neighbor? , etc.) the issue is over. The root problem must be dealt with.

alafia-120x75  (Oyeku) Answer: No. This is a very dark omen and indicates not only complete failure but that death or the spirits of the dead are lurking in the area and demanding attention.  The Reader should immediately ask again, this time asking what Spirit a sacrifice must be given to and what it wants in order to “kill” the sign – or not allow misfortune to befall the client  before continuing back with your original line of questions.

Closing a Chamalongo/Cowrie/Obi Reading
Once everything with regards to the client has been answered the final step I do with the chamalongos is to close out the reading with the Nfumbe or Nkisi is by asking “Is everything ncheche bacheche with me?” This is their opportunity to let me know if I need to cleanse myself with a special symbol, prayers to elevate my spirits, perform an extra spiritual work. Once they give an affirmative answer, the reading is closed and recorded so that both you and the client have something to refer to at a later time if a situation needs to be revisited.
